You have to find the hidden Special Springs. I don't play Sonic Advance often, but I do remember the first one. It's on the first act. Right before reaching the goal there's a yellow spring somewhere. Bounce on it and you'll land on a platform. Wait for the platform to go up and there it is

A few of these are actually unused, including versions of the Halfling and Elf where they're not holding a shield, and smaller version of the Gnome. There's another unused early version of the Elf where she's a lot smaller and is holding a rapier (which make sense, as the Rapier item is what summons her).

I was surprised to find that this game has a rather large amount of unused NPC sprites, including early versions of the MC and what seems to be an entire native tribe. It looks like the developers decided to go for a "fairy dreamworld" theme rather than stick to the African theme that the game's narrative initially tries to set up. Interesting.

Oh yes, and I love how that one dude is just a straight-up Red Mage. Feathered hat and all.
