This hack kind of brings things full circle, since an early idea for the mascot that became Sonic was a rabbit that could reach things from a distance by stretching its ears. Officially speaking, the idea was turned into Ristar.

The way it's done is something like Sagat's eyepatch and scar. A more complex character with a proper left and right would be Gill thanks to his red and blue halves.
Interestingly, games such as Commander Keen and Apogee's EGA palette games had unique left and right sprites, which you can see on their shading and accessories.

not a rom hacking expert, but I imagine that's hard to do while replacing a character via hacking a rom, as opposed to building a character from scratch. i.e. when making a zelda game, make sure link's sprites mirror to where his sword/shield matches the same hands in all directions.

anyway, these sprites are heckin good, and i'm glad my childhood girl crush finally got her chance to be in a sonic hack!

@Beaky McFeather: That would sorta ruin the point of a show having a dark atmosphere, you know?

Anybody: Come to think of it... There's a major error in these sprites. It's not anybody's fault because it's how it was in the ROM, but... You know that whole directional thing? Sprites are flipped horizontally to save space? Well... yeah. There's nothing wrong with this rip, just thought I'd bring that up.

@Doc Von Schmeltwick it'd be cool if SatAM did have Genesis-level shading though.

There's a very glaring difference though:
The shading is way too good in comparison to the show. :P

@Ton Yeah, especially when you look at that ending pose sprite.

These look like they're straight out of the show.
