Hey, Jay's art looks fantastic. I also like how Sonic's iris bends around the shape of his eye among other things (I would have never thought to do that). Yeah, that was a big issue with the reboot as well as the fact that stories just weren't all that interesting. I know they tried to explain why that was with the fingered hands at one time, but I forgot what they said about it and not sure if it really was a good explanation at all.

It always bugged me how the game characters (Minus Nack until 2006) had five fingered hands while the comic characters had four.
Thank goodness they changed that by the time Flynn took over.

The Archie comics were definitely a creative mess, but I always liked the clashing designs. It made the world feel bigger and more diverse to me.
I still think the best the series ever was was when Ian took over and did all kinds of cleaning and canon welding. As a long time reader, I was geeking out the whole time.

Jay Axer's art was this during that time. Whenever he got to do a full story, it was one of the better looking ones despite the writing.

As for the reboot. One main problem with newer characters was how almost all of them used Sonic as a base for the body.
No creative variety whatsoever. The sea animal characters were the biggest offenders of this. Razor the Shark was just "Shark Sonic"

Tracy was very bad at art when he first started. His puffy palms and minecraft tails. Don't remember Axer much, is his stuff really that good? There were several artists who were poop at their job there including Penders. I liked Spaz, but he seemed to rarely get a chance to do art inside the issue itself. There were some genuinely good stories and a lot of interesting lore. When Ian came on board I was excited to see what he would do with what he was given and he did a good job initially... and then the reboot happened. I know it was closer to the games, but the games lore wasn't conducive to a comic series, at least to me. Not enough character development, etc.

@SmithyGCN. Oh man. I couldn't get enough how bad that era was. Out of the artists back then, Jay Axer was one of my favourites. His art was so detailed, beautiful and on-model it was a shame he left not long after Ian Flynn came on board.
And TBH, I was never a fan of Tracy Yardley's art during Archie. And the main reason was because of how he drew facial expressions.
(Characters were often drawn with a big wide open mouth with human-like teeth) But since his time at IDW, he's improved a lot.

Let's be real, the only reason for the double standard for female sonic characters exists is cause most females in the archie comics were drawn by horny men.

I'm more for artistic liberty than for sticking to a general style unless it's for the same particular project. (ie: art has to stay consistent within the same comic/cartoon/etc) Characters at least do need to be recognizable, though. I honestly found the various styles in the comic to be refreshing, though not always good. There were quite a few artists I couldn't stand to look at their work. But there were those I liked.

@You Gotta be Joshing Me Nic was Nack's sister in the comics but she was basically Nack with boobs (IE Wearing only a sports bra)
She was planned to have a redesign that was only seen in the official encyclopedia but it was a very minor upgrade.

As you can see, just a palette swap with some additional attire. And still pantsless because Archie didn't understand that Sega's female characters are always fully clothed, so by the reboot female characters were redesigned to match to Sonic's actual style more.
(That explains why Sally was redesigned with new outfit that was more modest and no longer naked and wearing only a vest)

Now that I think about it, why is it that whenever two characters are a couple, they always make them look like brother and sister?

Some of Archie’s designs leave something to be desired.

They could've designed this character WAY better, as opposed to just making genderbent Nack.

She was his sister. A pun on “knickknack.”

Basically a genderswapped Nack. (What even is this character supposed to be? I didn't read too much of the comics.)
