As a former community manager/Discord server owner for Mario Royale, I can guarantee you that you do NOT want to be a part of that game's community. It's toxic. The games play differently, and what Murphmario said was nearly 100% accurate, as according to an interview (I can PM the twitter link), SMB35 was being tested as InfernoPlus's Mario Royale was released online. Probably because of how close they were in concept, Mario Royale was taken down without any hints as to why to avoid spoiling a surprise that they intended to release a year later.

@Murphmario Oh. But besides the customizable skins, you could play Mario Royale WITHOUT a Nintendo Account. While you have to have a Nintendo Account to play Super Mario Bros 35.

I'm pretty sure skins were added to versions that were made AFTER the takedown happened.

Think of it this way: You don't have to have a Nintendo Account to play Mario Royale, and it was a free game. Plus, you could play it on a PS4 controller, change your character to Yoshi, Pikachu, Peppino Spaghetti, the Orange Stick Figure from Alan Becker's channel, and other features I probably can't think of.

Nintendo probably took it down so they could get more attention towards SMB35, which you have to have a Nintendo Account to play, instead of Mario Royale, which was free and only required a computer.

Besides all of that, Nintendo didn't annouce SMB35 until months after they took Mario Royale down.

Super Mario Bros. 35 started development around Tetris 99's release, so the claim that this game rips off Mario Royale is false. Also the two games play differently, asides from the standard Mario stuff.

@CaptainGame17 Where is it (Mario Royale)? I can't find it again. I had a bookmark for it, but I lost it a while back.

Mario Royale actually still exists (managed by different people) but the community is- well, horrible. If you really want an invite to their Discord I can send one.

@Mysticus IKR, this kind of makes me mad: They took a fan made Mario game down, then they COPIED their idea, and made this. I like Nintendo, but I REALLY wish they weren't so bad when it comes to copyright stuff. Why Nintendo, why!? >:/

@DogToon64 If only Nintendo weren't so stingy to take down Mario Royale back then...

Hey look everyone! It's the rip-off of Mario Royale.
