@Doc von Schmeltwick If the ever do, they only need to make Ganon acurate. Not some stupid wizard, not fucking Doom demon, just Ganondorf or simply Ganon

@Juanchi Yup! That's why I'd love to see this game in particular remade. Either as they initially intended or as full 3D.

@Doc von Schmeltwick thank you for all this info. It is really interesting to know what they were planning with this game, it could have changed the way Zelda as a franchise could have been perceived

@Juanchi Neither were made by Phillips, the first two were made by Animation Magic and this one was made by a completely different studio having a ridiculously long development cycle; they started development at the same time.

Also, much of that has to do with most of the setting's attributes not really being fleshed out until ALttP (which was released mid-development for these games) and OoT (not released until later), so all they really had to go off is the first two games' manuals (explaining the liberties taken with Ganon there - he was a question mark in the enemy section and a Chernabog-like being in the story art, not to mention usually invisible in the game itself - as well as calling "Rupees" as "Rubies" - that came straight from the first game's manual, with some other materials having varied spelling, the attract mode spelling it as "Rupies," and the second game lacking them entirely).

Granted, the contemporary cartoon and comics did better at having their depictions be more in-line with what later games did, but that was more due to luck. Besides, AM having Ganon as a green-skinned sorcerer is oddly prescient to Ganondorf's design.

The main issue with this game, aside from the frequent reloads that were near-unheard of in the days of primarily cartridge-based gaming, is due to how ambitious it was at a time when they just couldn't do it. Crisp images had to be shrunk down to thumbnail size for the game to be able to run at all (at a resource-intensive level for the CDi, I may add), and lots of the gameplay variance they planned for was deemed infeasible. Items that were meant to all have wildly different effects with accompanying tutorials became simple "forward projectile" attacks, the ring items that were meant to be defensive ended up just being flashy attacks that sometimes moved funny, enemy behavior became almost invariably "wander randomly while making funny noises" with occasionally a projectile added, the list goes on. The amount of unused dialogue in the game is honestly staggering, but it explains a lot of that.

@Doc von Schmeltwick Ok, i can admit some look ok. The Ghini, the dodongo, and the Lupay are good, the NPCs look better than their cutscene counterparts. That's all the good sprites, the rest are just generic. Zelda and Link (in the first two games) have a rat/lizard looking face, the enemies look so childish yet so bizarre, in a bad way.

Phillips doesn't know what Ganon is, so they turned him into a reptilian wizard with an exagerated voice. And later on, after making two games, they found out Ganon is a demon, so for this game, he now looks like Satan, overly exagerated

I respect your opinion of liking the sprites, some are cool, but... yeah, they exist

@Juan I like the sprite design of both, personally. The animation of the sprites leaves a lot to be desired, and the sound design tends to be pretty silly, but I wouldn't call either awful by any stretch.

Good games? Nope, that's never gonna happen. The first two games had ugly artstyle, ugly controller, ugly sprites, saved by their stupid cutscenes and the internet. Phillips didn't know what they were doing and they fucked up, so they tried to change everything. Now it's all dark and more gritty, and the controllers still suck and it's not a funny meme like the first two, and they're all still too ugly to look at

@Tail All are actually fairly good games ruined by a bad controller. The CDi was intended as a CD player, not a game system. This one also has the problem of "the music resets every time you change screens."

It's a shame that this game got a worse score than the obviously shittier games, since this Zelda actually looks good
