I don't think I ever noticed Sonic's mouth moving here. Then again, once I unlocked Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I never found myself playing this half of the game by itself anymore.

After Sonic lands, there's a small animation where Sonic has a bigger smirk a few seconds after the character select and copyright sprites appear. You just have to look closely at the mouth tile to see it.

@Dolphman - Thanks! And yes, the most that can be acquired via both VDP and screen cap'ing is as seen. There's a few oddities that are going on with Sonic during the title screen, including 1-frame shifts as he lands and stands up showing two of him in that one magical second the time streams cross. The platform thing that moves up the screen to meet him also seems to prevent anything past what can be grabbed from being seen, so it's a mystery if Sonic Team completed his head or left the sprite like that.

@Dolphman it led to Thrash being written out completely, even though he was a Flynn creation, because Penders was the one to introduce the tasmanian devils as a concept.

That whole thing is a mess. I don't even blame Penders. Archie was making money on reprints of his work and he was getting none of the kickback and struggling financially. I understand that. It's just a shame that his solution was to sue for his characters and cause the reboot.

Moral: Always understand IP laws. In basically all countries, the owner of a setting owns all elements created for said setting. This is why the Geno situation is pure nonsense.

@Ton It's a shame the Penders lawsuit lead to Thrash becoming a racist villain instead of an anti-hero rival for Knuckles. What a waste of an interesting character.
