Can understand why he rarely says his catchphrases anymore. Overusing them would get annoying very quickly. Heck, they seemed to have toned down Homer's as well.
I think that clip from The Critic mocking Al Pacino saying "Hoo-aah!" all the time sums up overusing catchphrases in a nutshell.

And "Aye Caramba!" and "Get bent!"

All of which he stopped using, but are still occasionally brought up.

If you look up "Big fat hairy deal" the only results you'll come up with are for this game.

"Big fat hairy deal" was a phrase he only said THREE times in the comic's entirety.
Yet it was treated like it was his catchphrase. Like with Bart Simpson and how people thought "Cowabunga" was one of his, but he has only said it once during the 90s in Bart Gets an F. It's more famous for being Michelangelo's (TMNT) catchphrase.
Garfield isn't known for catchphrases. He's more famous for his snark and lifestyle.
