They did was that they had actors doing the moves and used a camcorder. It's no different than filming a movie. Then they go through the analog Hi-8 tape as it was more of an amateur project (the camcorder was owned by John Tobias, co-creator of the series). Digital editing has been around since the Amiga, at least for the television and film industry. Atari had already done the same with Pit-Fighter and various other games earlier but Mortal Kombat looks more cleaner. Midway did more work on cleaning up the footage and editing the graphics by hand. MK 2, 3 and Ultimate upgraded to a Betacam camcorder and moved on to using a blue screen while filming the actors, also more computer effects were added. By MK3 and Ultimate, less touch up was done on the sprites compared to MK1 and 2.

The only exceptions were Goro and later Kintaro where they made figures and did some stop motion animation. They actually had to make a second figure of Goro. Everyone else was a person.

Up to Mortal Kombat 4, Midway used this technique. Then once they felt that 3D got comfortable enough, it got ditched for the usual make models of the characters.

Goro was a clay figure. The other characters were actors in costumes. They took pictures of them doing each pose and digitized them. I think there are some behind the scenes videos on youtube.

So how where these Sprites made I mean they look so realistic cause I saw a Dorkly post about a Team Member looking around some old Files until he found a Morty Sprite Sheet wich I saw how it was done.

During the making of this Game were real People involved or did they just used Figurines instead of real People?

i believe the handful of characters from MK2 that returned for MKT have exclusive fatal sprites to be consistent with the UMK3 cast. I don't know for sure, though

@Mica Problem is i have no experience with rom directories. I know of a cheat called Free Fly Camera but that doesn't disable the background and i don't know what TCRF used to see the unused sprites they found.

My first time playing the original was the MSDOS port which at the time was the most arcade perfect compared to consoles' ports.

@Ton
I found a new cheat code for MK Mame, I need to update all my sheets, sorry. Shang will arrive then and it will be over for MK 1.
For MK Trilogy I don't have a cheat code to remove backgrounds and all sprites have been resized, the game is less pretty. I don't have a solution for this.

@Mica Oh yeah, me too. I'm a big fan of MK and all of its cheese.

Are you going to do Shang?
Also, if you're interested, Mortal Kombat Trilogy hasn't been ripped at all. I know most of the graphics are straight from UMK3, but Johnny Cage has a whole new sprite set in that one. I'm not sure if any others do...

@Silverlight
It won't work, cheat code file format is not the same. If you want I send you Mame and the codes by linkand all you have to do is configure the rom directory.

@Greenknight9000
Glad you appreciate that. Thanks.

@Silverlight
I use Mame 0.119 with a cheat code file that allows me to remove backgrounds and much more and photoshop. Lots of save state, screenshot and time.

@Jack sorridente
Thank You!

@dad34853, @smedis2
It's coming soon as well as the game menu and the sound pack.

@arringtastic1
Thanks to you too.

I was gonna attempt to rip MK2 but MAME only shows the palette not the tilemap. Would love to know how this person ripped MK1.

What tools are you using to rip sprites from this game? Can't use TiledGGD because of 5bpp and 6bpp which aren't supported in GGD.
