The ZX Spectrum version is terrible, also I just realized how wide Donkey Kong's leg gap is.

This looks really really good for a computer port, shame it gets overshadowed by the Spectrum version... if there is one, considering there were so many clones.

Not quite, the Amstrad CPC has 3 colour modes with most games only uses the first 2 (the 3rd one was what RetroSpriter mentioned but very few if any game uses it). Mode 0 on that this game uses has a higher color palette as in 16 colors to choose from like the Master System however it has a lower resolution. In this case, the developers are trying to squeeze as much as they can so it looks a bit squashed or blocky. After all many of these games are often done by a single person or a very small team and depends on the skill. Some games only have a very small screen size with a border taking up the rest of the space, apparently to get a higher frame rate since the computer can get pretty slow.
Mode 1 only has 4 colors to choose from like the NES but for the whole screen instead of a character but has a higher resolution. It can be used as an advantage but most of the time it was used for Spectrum ports... Some games use both Mode 0 and 1 at the same time with varied results.

Akira, it's because they're in "multi-color mode" the regular single pixels back then could only support two colors. (Notice the title screen.)

Why do those games in those consoles have this thing that they always have squished in-game sprites?
