Hey all, apologies for the late update today - Petie mentioned last week that we've been working on a new version of the site. I've only really mentioned this in a few places off the main site itself, but you heard him right! We're working hard, which is why I'm writing this update so late, and have been making fantastic progress on what we hope is to be one of the most substantial upgrades this site has seen in over 10 years. The update applies some massive quality of life features to the site for users and guests, not just for The Spriters Resource, but all of the sites overall.

We've been working on the upgrade for a number of months, but there are still a lot of core features we still need to finish putting together - this overhaul is not just an update to existing code, but rather a complete ground up recreation of all of our systems with significant improvements. There's some surprises in store, and I honestly can't wait to get people in on early previews to get feedback on how we can improve even more. I'm happy to answer a few of the most likely questions that will crop up now, but be aware we want to keep hype going, so we're keeping some things a little hush hush:
There will be a dark theme.
We are implementing tags on all assets and games for better navigation.
Navigating the sites by console will be just one way of browsing content.
Our search system is going to be unfathomably better than the current one.
Contributors with a reasonable number of submissions will be granted access to see our pending queue, and leave comments.
We will have a built-in notifications system on the website itself, instead of conveying all information via PMs on the forum.
I will be streaming some of our processes on Twitch after the new site launches, while also engaging with the community with fun events and the like!
And So Much More!!

I apologise for the lack of shout-outs in this update, it is 1am and I'm writing this from bed! They shall return next week. There is of course some wonderful content in this update, and I hope you'll all be checking it out.

Once we can invite people to explore what the sites will have to offer, we will do so, most likely at the beginning of 2025. Until then, we love hearing your ideas for things we can improve! I've spent much of my life on this website now, and believe that Petie and I will do this site's reputation justice. I wouldn't ever wish to make changes I didn't believe were for the overwhelming betterment of our user experience, and I eagerly await being able to unveil more.

I love when people say "all I'm going to say" before repeating something they've said multiple times, backed down on previously, and conceded on before.

I want all users to enjoy the new experience, but I won't pander to complaints of updates. It's ridiculous to argue we should still be using Windows 3.1, but you have the right to continue operating on monochrome displays if you please.

The issue here is that one particular person is getting up-in-arms every chance they get without actually knowing anything about the change to begin with. I could accept being upset they had seen and interacted with the new version and genuinely didn't like it but the constant and entirely baseless negativity is just ridiculous and I'm sick of seeing it.

Ever since X and Eclipse, people have been getting up-in-arms every time a website changes format, regardless of whether it's a good change.

@shadowman44 Oh good, this tired nonsense yet again. You’re right - it is all you say and I’m tired of seeing it. Why don’t you go ahead and think back to your preschool years and practice one of those golden rules at this point? If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

We are all about constructive criticism but you’ve spent the last year making wild assumptions and complaining every chance you got with absolutely no idea what it is we’re doing and I’m just so done with it.

To everyone else, yes, there will be a proper dark mode and no, we will not be littering the site with ugly web fonts. To be transparent here, headers and titles will be using a specific font but the bulk of the text on the site will remain the standard Verdana it is now.

All I'm going to say:
If the site doesn't look how it does now when the site's updates come out, don't be surprised when you get hundreds of angry emails and or social media posts complaining. You chose to do this, so you're responsible for making people angry.

All I ask is to at least not change TSR's website visual (at least don't put some custom webfont, please). I'm also very happy with getting a dark mode, so thank you, admin team!
